The Hiccups uses a visual aesthetic inspired by Edward Gorey and “The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari” to talk about trying to find a solution to a problem without an obvious answer. It shows that sometimes even our best efforts won’t fix it. And sometimes those problems just go away on their own; life doesn’t have pat answers.
The goal is to make kids giggle while offering parents/co-readers the opportunity to discuss emotions that may feel overwhelming (i.e., no matter how big a feeling is, it will always go away).
